I do not want to mislead my friends and family by pretending my book is being published by a traditional publishing company. This is not the truth. The truth is I do not have the patience for this long process, nor do I require the “status” seemingly obtained by publishing with one of the big publishing houses. I believe that my book will speak for itself, and the value of my work will ultimately be determined by the number of copies I sell and the reaction of readers.
I did a lot of research while writing THE FRUIT OF THE FALLEN. I discovered the market and economy was not, and is still not, conducive to new authors. It is very difficult to convince a publisher to take on a new author. And even if they do, the author ends up doing most of the promoting and must sell a lot of books to make any kind of profit from all the work involved. Publishers are spending 95% of their time financing and promoting 5% of their books. Publishers are merging, filing for bankrupcy, and retooling their business models in order to survive the economy crunch- thus the in-between publishers such as Xlibris, a publisher that falls between traditional publishing and the vanity press.
I wrote THE FRUIT OF THE FALLEN with my students and volleyball players in mind. I gave a handful of students the opportunity to read the manuscript early in the revision process. Their reaction encouraged me to finish the editing and get the book published as quickly as possible so that their friends and families could read it as well. I decided then that I did not want to wait the necessary two to five years for a traditional publisher to pick up the project and produce the book. I decided I wanted to control the process and, as an additional bonus, retain the rights to my work.
I have chosen Xlibris because their services fit what I wanted. They are also owned in majority by Random House, so I was encouraged that an established publisher was backing their effort. Xlibris allows me to be directly involved with all aspects of production, such as cover design, interior layout, marketing, distribution, etc. To tell the truth, I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing my ideas come to life. I chose the cover design, layout, and all marketing text and materials.
Traditional publishing could by in my future. Perhaps after I sell several thousand copies or so, and a traditional publisher makes an offer to help with advertising and distribution beyond my resources alone, I will take on a partner. Until then, look for my book in a local Southern California bookstore and online soon! Help THE FRUIT OF THE FALLEN to become the first author-published national bestseller.
